Zhang Tongsheng: Integration between creative concept of photography art and nat

2017-05-29

On May 21, Saturday, Professor Zhang Tongsheng, with his photography works over the past years, was invited to attend "Photography Monthly Talk" of Photo Beijing 2017, where he, centered on the theme "Photography: Origin and Future", shared his observations on the integration between creative concept of photography art and nature, life, and culture.

Zhang Tongsheng, as a military photographer, has always injected a strong sense of social responsibilities in his works. According to his understanding, taking photos of disasters is, instead of displaying cruel scenes, to arouse public awareness and admonishment on disasters. When we recover from physical wounds and mental sufferings caused by natural disasters, these images will awaken to our sober awareness.

Photography will be nonsense without creative concepts, and creative concepts are indispensible with the integration between art of photography and nature, life, and culture. Professor Zhang's indomitable will is admirable. Through his shaken works, Professor Zhang illustrates such theory: "images must have their own characteristics, which are manifested through accurate and truthful photographic language. These stories should be carried forward from one generation from another. We have inescapable responsibilities of learning lessons and gaining experience from the history, and questing for the future."

Professor Zhang's works are brimming with powerful visual impact of cultural abundance upon enjoying records of nature, events, residents and their lives in West China, prior to purchasing the abundant connotation. Looking through such background, the works have full manifestation in Zhang Tongsheng's love and admiration of West China. He comments that the wind comes from the west, and so does the water, the soil, and the residents. Thus, we have our roots in the west, where the footmarks of ancestors are traceable. In the past 40 years, in order to capture the excellent photography works, he has left his footmarks almost every corner across the plateaus in West China: from Qinghai, Tibet, Xinjiang, Xinjiang at the foot of Kunlun Mountain to Dunhuang, Gansu and Hexi Corridor; from Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi alongside the Yellow River to Henan and Hebei in North China Plain. West China is home to magnificent mountains and mighty rivers, intelligent and diligent folks, as well as abundant traditional Chinese culture. West China, regarded as "the heaven in the heart" by Zhang Tongsheng, has provided an inexhaustible source of inspiration in his works, for example, Acquiring Water Supply with Techniques, and Happy Journey, which have full manifestation in his heart and soul to the land and the people.

Words to photographers

We, as photographers, should surmount various limits, explore our favorite themes, and liberate our minds, thus creating a favorable environment in which photography brings us enormous happiness and hope. We embrace our lives by engaging in photography; photography will ensure us a life which is healthier with a bright prospect.
